No New Posts Nopporo Forest Park

Designated as a natural park in 1968 to celebrate the centennial of Hokkaido's development, Nopporo Forest Park is one of Sapporo's most popular nature attractions. Covering more than 2,000 hectares, it is also a wildlife reserve. It contains 110 species of trees and more than 400 wild plant species, as well as some 200 mushroom species. There are also 140 species of wild birds and 1,300 different insect species. Children will delight in the popular Yezo squirrels, which can be seen almost everywhere in the park. There are no restaurant facilities, however, so bring along a lunch box.

No New Posts Mt. Moiwa

Mt. Moiwa is in the very center of Sapporo. At a height of 531 meters, it offers a fabulous panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. You can see right into the distant Sea of Japan and the Shokambetsu mountains. Mt. Moiwa itself has a rich natural environment, covered with forests, so the colors of the mountains change with the seasons. The gondola ride up or down the mountain is spectacular especially at night for those with romance on their minds.

No New Posts Odori Park

Odori Park, which is right in the center of Sapporo, plays a major role in the cultural and leisure activities of the city. It includes trees, lawns, flower beds, sculptures, monuments, fountains and a shallow waterway for children to play in. There are activities taking place in the park all year round. From April to October, for example, stalls selling all kinds of snacks spring up and the park becomes a vast open-air eatery. The park is home to the Bon and Yosakoi Soran Festivals in the summer, and in the winter it hosts the Snow Festival and White Illumination.

No New Posts Hoheikyo Gorge

The Hoheikyo Gorge is a popular year-round hiking spot set about seven kilometers upstream from Jozankei Onsen, and there is a good reason to visit—it is beautiful. In winter, the area is a ghostly white and in spring it turns slowly green and lingers through the summer before burning out in yellows, crimson and browns in autumn. You can approach the lake and summit by electric cable car. If you are hungry, you can eat at the Rest House Hoheikyo. Special dishes include broiled rainbow trout and inoshishi or wild boar and hot pot. Call for hours and other details.

It is also possible for beginners to take lessons, but be sure to call in advance to ensure that an English-speaking instructor is available.

Board Information & Statistics

Board Description
Sapporo
With a population of nearly two million, Hokkaidō's vibrant and booming capital SAPPORO is the fifth largest city in Japan. As the transport hub of the island, you're almost bound to pass through here. However, it's worth lingering as Sapporo is generously endowed with parks and gardens and laid out in an easy-to-follow grid plan. The mountains that attract skiers and snowboarders rise up to its south, while the coast is less than thirty minutes away.

Pleasantly cool temperatures tempt many visitors to Sapporo's Summer Festival (usually July 21– Aug 20), which features outdoor beer gardens and other events in Ōdōri-kōen, the swathe of parkland that cuts through the city centre. This park is also the focus of activity during the fabulous Yuki Matsuri, a "snow festival" held every February.
